Eight19 a hit at Rio +20
Eight19’s solar-powered pay-as-you-go solar lighting and battery charging system for use in the developing world has been included in the newly launched Sustania100, a list of 100 solutions and technologies aimed at creating sustainable societies.
The listing was announced at Rio +20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil, and came just days after the company was named as one of the 11 winners of the World Business and Development Awards (WBDA), which recognises inclusive business models that deliver commercial success as well as help improve social, economic or environmental conditions.
Eight19’s IndiGo box is designed to offer an alternative source of power for home lighting to paraffin burners, popular in many off-grid communities in the developing world. Users purchase a scratch card with a number which is then sent as a text to the IndiGo server which validates the number and sends back a unique passcode, which the user then enters into the IndiGo box.
This pay-as-you-go model is cheaper and safer than paraffin and suitable for electricity in homes, schools and workplaces. blog comments powered by Disqus
