ViewRanger has been named best app in the Mapping/Location based sector at this year’s Appy Award Ceremony in San Francisco.

The app, which offers high quality location and mapping services to outdoor enthusiasts across the world, beat off competition from the developers of the apps Companion and Scout to win its category, earning a place alongside other illustrious apps like Flipboard and Ask for iPhone as overall winners at the ceremony.

Understandably, Ian Pond, CMO at ViewRanger, was delighted to emerge triumphant: "We are very pleased to be recognised by the Appy Awards as the outstanding GPS navigation app,” he said.

“Building on the great response received at the launch of our USA edition, we are confident that this award will continue to make 2012 a successful year for ViewRanger."

The annual awards, hosted this year by online communications firm MediaPost, honour the year’s finest apps in all sectors on all platforms and devices. Finalists are selected after a rigorous debate amongst the executive jury, which features numerous veteran developers, advertisers and technology writers, before reaching the final.

By winning this award, ViewRanger has added to the pile of awards and platitudes it’s earnt over the years. These have included being named Best Independent App by Mobile World in 2010 and gaining rave reviews from Channel Five’s The Gadget Show.
